SPACE JUNK - THE NEXT BIG PROBLEM
Over the years we have seen many space shuttles, satellites, telescopes being sent to outer space, some successful while others becoming a part of the experiment process. Though the seeds to the future are blossoming bit by bit what about the ones that couldn't. Yes, you got it right, the problem of Space junk. In the upcoming years, the next evolution of mankind is the Space Revolution, and this time the problems are even more than we expected. The debris created in this region of the universe can neither be handpicked nor small campaigns can work here.
So why not stop it in the first place?
Here are some key measures that we can look upon to minimize the upcoming Astro threats:-
1. SpaceX's Starship mission:-
Elon Musk's starship, one of the biggest rocket and spacecraft, still under construction, plans to not only take the 2nd giant leap of the entire human race but also envisions to remove the giant space debris thereby unclogging the upper parts of the atmosphere. The 118m tall Super Heavy rocket is sufficient in multitasking, shouldering the responsibility of sending humans and deorbiting junk from space.
2. Lasers Broom:-
Highly powered lasers, being constructed by different countries around the world are considered to be the best solution by many scientists as their feasibility is considered very high. Powerful lasers will be shot towards one part of the junk which will create an imbalance, and the debris will fall towards the orbit and finally sinking into the ocean.
3. The e.DeOrbit mission:-
This mission proposed in 2014 was launched by the European Space Agency to curb out the massive problem. It is supposed to use giant nets to capture the space junk and push it towards the earth's atmosphere preferably towards the giant oceans so that while entering the atmosphere it decades into small pieces. This debris picking object will be targeting an altitude of 800-1400 km.
4. The Sling-Sat Space Sweeper:-
Texas A&M University first came up with the idea of using a technology that will use momentum to decrease the dump. The idea is to collect the floating materials in the sling and throw it towards the atmosphere at a particular angle. And the continuous rotation of the sweeper will let it change its momentum forever thereby collecting particles and de-junking space.
5. Increasing the rates of occupying the cosmos area:-
With the decreasing cost of space exploration, that day is not far when every single person can have a satellite of their own. Now to have control over the space used in the upper strata, the need for a proportionate increase in cost for putting up satellites will keep things in perspective.
Needless to say, our future is bright with the upcoming technologies and brilliant minds of the 21st century but we must never forget to cherish what we have with a sustainable thought to protect what we possess so that not only us but the future of our mankind is in safe hands too.
